Quantity surveyors in Dubai: Our Independent Ship & Marine Surveyors did at the request of the correspondents, attend at the consignee’s warehouse in order to carry out a survey of 2 Nos. of crates that were reported to damaged.
The Quantity surveyors from Constellation
attended the survey at the consignee’s warehouse at Al Awir,
Ras al Khor industrial area), met the representative of
the consignee and carried out the survey of 2 film faced
plywood crates that were reported to be damaged, on January
2014.
At the time of inspection, the surveyors noticed that the
2 Nos. of quantity damaged crates were stacked high on their
premises. They noted that the cargo was stored in an open
condition and it was found that all the packages were partly
wet due to the rain that had occurred in the region over
the past 2-3 days.
The constellation quantity surveyors wrote down the details
derived from the marking on the crates.

Apart from the above, no other major exceptions were noticed on the 2 Nos. of Film Faced Plywood Crates
EXTENT DAMAGE
As mentioned above a total 5+15 =20 sheets were noted in
damaged condition.
COST OF THE DAMAGE CARGO:
As per invoice the total value of 273 crates was USD. 326,736.40.
Therefore, USD. 1,196.83 was the amount of one crates. One
crate is 50 sheets, therefore per sheet worked out to USD.
23.94. Cost of 20 damaged sheets worked out to USD. 478.80.
SALVAGE VALUE
Consignee informed the quantity and quality surveyors that
the damaged sheets of Film faced plywood could be sold only
at depreciated cost. He then agreed to accept the damaged
20 sheets for 40% of the invoice value. This worked out
as USD.191.50.
CAUSE OF DAMAGE
It may be noted that out of the total shipment of 273 crates
of Film faced plywood only part contents of 2 of the crates,
that is 20 sheets of plywood were found with scratches,
chaffing and cut marks and in a damaged condition. In view
of the visible damages noted to the crates in which the
said 20 damaged cargo was available, it was indicated that
these crates were rough handled at some stage, not known
to our Constellation Marine quantity surveyors, thereby
leading to damage to their part contents.
