Vessel Dry Dock Superintendency
Dry Docks, whether preventive or regulatory
requirements, it is a necessary activity during a vessel’s
life cycle. These dockings are always very keenly attended
by superintendency and ship owner’s representatives.
These dockings are expensive, challenging and very prone
to unforeseen circumstances, and is often believed to be
one component most likely to overrun budgetary allocations.
It is thus not surprising that traditionally vessel dry
dock activities were generally managed in house by the owner
and or its manager, under the premise that this procedure
will have the tightest controls over its execution.
In recent times the way ships and vessels are managed now
is changing. It is not uncommon to have technical superintendents
allocated fleets the size and number of which were unheard
of till a few years ago.
While it is easy to speak casually about a “connected
world” in reality it is rather difficult for superintendents
to be away for longer periods of time at a particular dry
dock, and still expect them to execute monitoring his /
her remaining fleet with the same level of diligence and
attention.
Then there is the area of OPEX and budget allocation / expenditures
which if not investigated closely and regularly has every
possibility to escalate to unwanted levels.
It is thus beneficial for owners and managers to consider
engaging services of independent Dry Dock consultants, and
most advantageous if this is commenced right at the stage
of drafting the specifications.
Constellation Marine services offers a full gamut of dry
dock services, from consolidation of specifications, accurate
quotes from multiple yards and selection of one that is
just right for the owner.
Look around and owners will see a multitude of organizations
that offer such services, with the common and often heard
adage of “Technical superiority and cost minimization” touted
as the most important selling point.
However, it’s much more than that, and at Constellation, experience has shown that a predictable and hassle free solution is often a key in ensuring that schedules are met in order that vessels are turned around to resume what they are required to do best – which is “to get on-hire and earn freight”.
We also believe a cost minimization is a rationale for low quality outcome, its thus imperative that the focus is on minimizing or removing “unexpected costs” which are often associated with ineffective planning, lack of control and decision making, often the biggest factors that differentiate between a dry dock and a successful dry dock.
Our dedicated team of Master Mariners, Chief Engineers, and/or Naval Architects, can easily differentiate repair specifications that could be executed afloat, by ship staff, or at anchorage, thereby concentrating efforts on the most critical components to be executed when on the blocks, saving time and energy and narrowing the focus boundaries so that effective supervision can be achieved.
Within the regions we operate, we also enjoy a tremendous by professional relationship with regulators such as class and flag and coupled with our knowledge of requirements through which we can easily ensure class visits are kept to a minimum and residual attendances removed.
In addition, we work with carefully vetted agents and 3PL service providers, who can offer often overlooked but essential services related to spare clearances, freighting, transportation and the like, including on time delivery of products efficiently and effectively.
